Samite with Hunting Scene, Red

Reference : 103-07-0003

Our reproduction of a Dutch silk from the 2nd half of the 16th century.

Images of animals and hunting scenes has accompanied the mankind ever since. Throughout the ages complete bestiaries of mixed real and fantastic animals typical for each culture have formed. Especially in Middle Ages the animals have perceived its symbolic and allegorical dimension. In the western mainly Christian bestiary the animal typically symbolizes either the Good or the Evil. Nevertheless these symbols of moral standards are rarely obvious on fabrics where animals had mainly decorative function like in this splendid silk.

This renaissance textile has an obvious resemblance to the older Eastern scenes of hunting with large variety of animals. Here we can see panthers, dogs, rabbits and wild boars.

The samite replica is produced using a medieval weaving technique based on a twill weave. Although made of pure silk, the fabric is quite durable. It is not as fine, nor as glossy, as our pure silk damasks. This fabric is woven using our unique technology so that it most closely resembles the samite samples seen in museums.

The original belongs to the textile collection of Musée de Cluny in Paris.
