Gothic brocade with animal motifs, violet

Reference : 103-08-0005

Replica of Italian Gothic lampas, early 15th century

The novel pattern reproduced here features several realistic animal scenes. A lion rests under a tree, a dog moves through the brush, an eagle spreads its wings in flight, and a pair of ducks float on a stylized pool. The creatures, depicted in the lifelike fashion typical of the High Gothic era, are counterbalanced by large, stylized ornaments – pomegranates and horizontal bands of flowers – characteristic of the Late Gothic. The result is a striking example of a balanced mingling of both styles.

This reproduction was woven by hand in violet silk, rayon, and a metallic thread coated in real gold. This is not run-of-the-mill Lurex, a mere imitation of gold thread. The exquisite metallic thread makes this weave supple, fine, and light, and the gold will never lose its shine. The gold thread is exposed on the back of the fabric, so use of a lining is recommended.

Special note: This hand-woven brocade is of the quality produced by the same weaver for His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan.

The original pattern is found on a fragment of a Gothic chasuble, a liturgical garment, in a collection in Vienna and Cleveland.
